When Melania entered the mall, she was drawn to the deep blue ocean on the other side of a thick glass. An abundance of shiny and shimmery fish glowed brightly, reminding her of the silvery stickers that caught the light and bent it into the bright colors of the rainbow. Among the beautiful fish, divers moved in the water in their snorkels and flippers. Melania blinked twice because she spotted a beautiful mermaid!
“I have wanted to see one and meet one and even be one since I was little, but others have told me they are not real. Yet here is one, and now two!” Thought Melania. She wanted to rush to see the mermaid up close when she noticed her Mama smiling down at her.
“This is a giant aquarium,” Mama explained. “There are thousands of sea creatures living inside, all for you to see.” “A giant aquarium?” gasped Melania. “This makes me think of the tiny aquarium on my teacher’s desk at school. It can barely hold five fish.”
As they moved closer, Melania followed one fish after another as they met and ate, hid and played. Then she saw a bright white light moving slowly in the distance. Suddenly, the mermaids and divers disappeared from her view. Other children noticed the light too. As it came closer, there were shrieks of fear and gasps of surprise.
The light was attached to the head of a creature belonging in a scary movie, not in an aquarium. Even though she was scared at first, Melania knew that the fish was inside the glass and couldn’t harm her. She stayed still while the other children backed away.
As the creature neared Melania, it slowed down and drifted into the current. Melania felt it was looking directly at her. She gathered her courage and introduced herself. “My name is Melania,” she said cheerfully. “What is your name?”
To her great surprise, the fish replied in a calm, deep voice. “My name is Enzo, and I am an anglerfish. I thought you would run away from the glass like the others. Are you not frightened of me?”
“I was frightened at first, but I am also very curious. You are different from all the other fish I have ever seen. How do you have your own light?”
“My kind of fish lives at the bottom of the ocean where there is no light,” Enzo responded. “I carry my own light to find my way, and for other purposes.” “I would be frightened at the bottom of the sea,” Melania admitted with a shiver.
“I have two nightlights in my bedroom in case I wake up because I'm scared of the dark. If I come to visit you, I would bring my daddy’s torch.”
Enzo seemed to smile as he slowly shook his head.
“There is no need for a torch. You can simply follow the light.”
He then turned his whole body towards the glass that separated them.
As Melania watched, his light moved away from his head towards the glass. Melania's eyes grew wider as she watched it slip through the glass and drop softly to the floor in front of her feet! She looked up to find Enzo staring at her.
“Until we meet again,” he said before turning and swimming back into the deep blue water of the aquarium.
